What is condensation?

Condensation is caused by high levels of humidity in the air becoming trapped within your home. This can be due to one of three major factors or a combination of more than one of them: inadequate heating, poor insulation or insufficient ventilation.

How can I tell if I have a problem?

Condensation problems are on the increase. As many as 25% of us are affected by it and most damp problems reported are actually condensation problems. There are a few tell-tale signs that you have a condensation issue in your home. When it starts to become an issue which requires treatment, you will see some of the following signs:

  • Blistering paint
  • Damp walls that feel wet to touch
  • Peeling wallpaper
  • A musty or damp odour
  • Black mould growing along the edges of windows, behind furniture and junctions between the wall and floor or ceiling

Once you know that you have condensation, you can begin to think about the best condensation treatment to take. You can also rule out other damp problems such as rising damp or penetrating damp. It’s important when you book a damp survey, that the surveyor who assesses your property is experienced in all types of damp – including condensation.

Whilst the best approach to any damp issue is to organise a professional treatment, there are also things that you can do yourself to help minimise the chance of damp condensation in your home getting worse.

The best way to do this is to:

  • Avoid drying clothes inside your home – especially on radiators
  • Make sure you cover boiling pans and try to use an extractor fan to remove any moisture caused by cooking
  • Keep the home well-ventilated, especially bathrooms and kitchens
  • Try to maintain a low level of background heating with no rapid temperature changes

Black mould problems

When warm air touches cold surfaces, such as walls and windows, the moisture within the room will condense. If relative humidity levels are at 80% for six hours or more, this tends to lead to black mould growth.

A variety of daily activities can increase the humidity in your home. Cooking, washing, showering or even just breathing. All of these will release moisture into the air, and this can lead to condensation and black mould damp.
